I did it years and years ago, but nobody's 'got' it yet. If you get
it, let me know! (Clue: Who is Avalokiteshvara, the Kwannon Bosatsu,
Kuan Yin, or, (what is it?), the Hasse Kwanon? I remember her, huge
and darkly gleaming above a litter of paper prayers, in her temple
in Kamakura in 1952. Is it distance? Or is Buddhism not so bad? Zen,
at least, says: "If you meet the Buddha on the road to enlightenment,
kill him." Ah Religions! Such rich iconographies for an artist!
